2. My Sweet Lord – George Harrison
Of all the solo Beatles songs on this countdown, My Sweet Lord was the first to reach number 1. Indeed, fun fact, it reached number 1 twice, with the song being rereleased in 2002 following Harrison’s death.
Topping charts all over the world in 1970-71, Harrison really called upon his Asian lifestyle influences for this one, creating, like much of his work, an incredibly spiritual gem. As ever, Harrison’s guitar is fantastic, subtle but effective, and his lyrics insightful.
He did come into a bit of trouble following this song’s release, mind you, with shouts of plagiarism sounding out due to My Sweet Lord’s similarity with the The Chiffons’ He’s So Fine, but that aside, this is truly one of the best Harrison’s ever produced, and that’s counting his time with The Beatles, too.
