‘Game Of Thrones’ May Have Just Cast A Rock Star To Play Rhaegar Targaryen

(Warning: The following contains major potential — albeit largely theoretical — SPOILERS for ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7. Accordingly, proceed with whatever level of caution your friendly neighborhood Three-Eyed Raven suggests to you is wise…)

Now, HBO’s Game of Thrones may have long been defined by the fan theories that it has inspired (much as the original source novels have been), but there’s still always very much been one theory to rule them all: R+L=J. Now, that theory — that Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark are secretly Jon Snow’s real parents — may have been all-but confirmed for Season 6 via Bran’s Tower of Joy-based visions, but it technically remains unofficial.

After all, we still haven’t actually met the young Rhaegar Targaryen — and in the absence of the theoretical father, it’s difficult to be sure just what’s going on.

That, though, may be about to change in Season 7, as it seems that…

Game Of Thrones May Have Just Cast Its Rhaegar Targaryen

And, in a surprising turn of events, it seems that the show’s new Rhaegar may well be… a popular singer in an electronicore band. Yup, you read that right. Y’see, the lead singer of I See Stars, Devin Oliver, just posted this image (and crucially, caption) to Instagram, and… well, it’s opened up the floodgates of show-informed speculation:

I may or may not have made an appearance in Game Of Thrones season 7 @leaborama

That’s right, I See Stars’ Devin Oliver may well be making an appearance in Season 7 of Game of Thrones, and for many fans that might just suggest that he’s about to bring Rhaegar Targaryen to life in the process. The reason? Well, as it turns out, Oliver is pretty much a dead ringer for a Targaryen…

…as well as bearing a striking resemblance to what you’d expect a youthful, blonde father of Jon Snow to look like. Which has inevitably led to tidal waves of speculation that Oliver will be playing Rhaegar.

What’s more, Rhaegar has a secret — once shared by Barristan Selmy in the show — that might just make a singer like Oliver all the more perfect for the role. Specifically, as Selmy once revealed to Daenerys:

“Rhaegar never liked killing. He loved singing.”

And was, in fact, famous both for being an accomplished musician and for the “iron tones” of his voice. As such, the idea of hiring a singer best known for handsomely signing fairly aggressive electronic songs may not be quite as strange as it initially seems:

So, the big question now? Do we finally have our Rhaegar Targaryn, or is Oliver just screwing with us? We may well have a long wait to find out, what with Game of Thrones not being set to return until next summer and all…
